Mike and Mike are a couple of complete nimrods and I don't see how anyone can listen to Colin Cowherd's blowhard bullshit.

^^ I don't know if you're kidding, but I actually like Rome. Or at least I did. I haven't listened to him in years. He has a shtick, but I enjoyed his show. That said, given it's been a few years since I last checked him out, I don't know if I'd still be able to tolerate him.
I agree with the OP, Cowherd is a wiener. I think Van Pelt is decent.
But, yeah, I can't think of any national guys where I'd say "so-and-so has a great show and I catch it whenever I can." Most of the guys I will listen to are only passable because it's better than listening to the office din when I'm in the mood for something other than music.

ESPN radio is pretty awful.
Love Jim Rome - I've listened to him for about fifteen years now and he's actually gotten better. He does a lot of self-parody now, which is funny. He's an acquired taste, but once acquired, it's very enjoyable.
Dan Patrick is hit or miss with me. He's almost unbearable sometimes with his sighing and always trying to ask the killshot question. Cowherd is fun in small doses because he usually has an interesting contrarian take, but yeah, he's a blowhard.
Can't stand Vic the Brick/Chris Hartman/Pat O'Brien, or the various former black athlete/nerdy white guy pairings on the weekends. Don't like Ferrell either, but to each his own.

I use to really like Rome but I have a Sirius now so I haven't listened to TerRad in a long time. A few years ago Rome had a 3 hr show on my local DC sports station 980, then out of the blue it turned into a 2 hr show and Tony Kornheiser time slot took the first hour of Rome's show. Well, Rome didn't take that shit laying down. He kept tell his DC listeners that they wouldn't get a tour stop unless they had all 3 hrs of the Jungle. He ordered me to "bang my monkey" and demand I get my 3rd hr. It got a little old and Kornheiser, who honestly used to be really really funny on the radio called him out for not only reading all of these long winded takes from a script, but it turned out Rome didn't even write his "takes".
There were some fun momments from the Jungle though, my favorite was the "Lunch with the Monkey" bit. Lunch with the monkey, Lunch with the Monkey, Monkey, Monkey, Monkey, Monkey!!

They're pretty bad, Vic the Brick is a joke and is pretty murderable during the Lakers season. I do like Petros & Money though, I think Petros and his odd inflections are hilarious and that's mostly why I listen to the show. Also, FM music radio stations are complete shit, so I'd rather listen to (in some cases) bad sports talk shows

Based on your second point RE Dan Patrick, it appears that you do not know that he still has a show? Available online (live + free) @ danpatrick.com, iPhone/Android Apps (free) as well as several local affiliates. Additionally, he is on TV (I see him of FSN in Kansas City) and I know he has a large deal with Direct TV. Maybe I inferred incorrectly, but he is around, and is still great IMHO.
I listen to Rome most days. He can get a little windy on some topics, but its usually decent radio, and when he is on a good topic, it can make for some great laughter.
Mike and Mike are boring. Cowherd is okay, but I like his TV show (Sports Nation on ESPN) better.
Doug Gotlieb may still have a show on ESPN and I liked it (when I would listen, 1+ years ago).

Am I the only person that can't stand general sports radio? 80% of the content is trivial news about New York, LA, Boston, Philly and Dallas teams. I think one of the major problems is that these radio personalities know nothing about things that aren't sports related, so the dialogue is fairly inclusive to people that just jerk off to box scores and injury reports. Discussion about the fringe of the sports world is the most interesting, and nobody is good at it. Chuck Klosterman needs a sports radio show.

+50. I hate Mike & Mike in the morning, if they weren't talking sports I don't know what else they'd be doing in that studio.

Travis Rodgers (formerly producer of the Jim Rome show) has his own national show now. I don't listen regularly, but I have heard some pretty funny gags on his show, such as "Smack-off on a mobile," and this:

I listen to the herd pod cast daily. I like that he isn't a typical sports guy. Almost never talks about games and plays, but themes and life. He is the sports guy for smart, non-sports guys.
Mike and mike are x's and o's, talk about plays guys. I realized recently I can't stand golic, all he does is interject with stupid one word comments.

In Dallas I believe we are up to 3 full-time sports talk radio stations now, up from zero in 1994. In each, they pretty much run locally produced shows most of the day (ESPN runs Mike & Mike in the morning drive slot) and syndicated shows off-peak. The quality of the local shows is so good that I find the syndicated shows just not worth the effort.
The station here that dominates the market is KTCK, The Ticket. The were the first one in the market. They really do more "guy radio" that is anchored in sports. Lots of comedy and schtick. It has a cult-like following. Frankly it's a lot like our own little DT forum. Lots of inside jokes and self-references. If you get it and are a long-time listener it is a lot of fun. If not, it can be offputting.
I'm addicted to it and have been pretty much since it came on the air in '94. Consequently I don't really listen to much syndicated stuff. Occassionally if I'm coming home late from something they run the Dan Patrick show late at night and I'll listen to that. Otherwise I don't really care for any of the syndicated shows.
