The JLC gyrotourbillion would truly be a great choice if money is no limit: it's a beautiful watch (much more so in real life than that picture) and will increase in value beautifully. (I suspect it's out of your budget really, anyway.)

But, if you don't like it, I think any of the JLC reversos that you mentioned would be a great choice. A. Lange & SÃ¶hne is also a great choice. The Omega DeVille collection is actually a lot better than their Rolex lookalikes. I also think Vacheron Constantins are a great choice.

This is a difficult question, because many of the high-end watches are going to be on leather straps (think IWC, JLC, and Breguet) and will be too dressy for "all-around wear."

On the other hand, high-end steel bracelets, e.g. AP, has a VERY distinctive look and may not be to your liking, especially since you're not a "bling" guy.

I know you said, "no Rolexs, too common, and too old man." The problem is, Rolex does the "all-around" thing very well, and so does Omega.

If you want to do different but still purposeful, check out the new Explorer II...it's not out yet, but I love it (both white and black face):

So, you are basically looking for something that is casual enough for a 20 something guy, but high grade?

I like your call on the Royal Oak, although I feel that the rubber strap ruins what was a watch designed to have an integrated bracelet. Get one in all steel and get the classic size. Eventually, walking around with a tuna can strapped to one's wrist will lose its appeal.

I would also recommend a Patek Aquanaut, a Vacheron Overseas or something in that vein if you are trying to stay sporty. IWC and JLC also make great everyday pieces in steel.

People who know nothing about watches but have insane amounts of cash. Hubolt is not a respected brand. If you want to go ULTRA high-end, your own A Lange & Sohne is the way to go. They're expensive not because of bling (i.e., diamonds) but because of how they're hand crafted, the tradition, and the insane amount of complications.

Again, probably too dressy for you. These are usually worn by the CEOs of big-time German companies and some upper, upper crust folks in NYC etc.

If you want a nice looking watch that looks sporty and modern, I highly recommend the IWC Aquatimer Chronograph. Looks very nice in fact.

It's not the watch that looks old, it is the image it has. I do know that all the three brands have been around for quite a while, and all of them are of high quality, but still the image of a rolex is a different than the image of a panerai or jlc (whereas i do have to admit that the jlc does have the vibe of an old man's watch but i start to really really like it - dunno why
