A question to those in-the-know about watches / Hamilton watches...

Looking for a watch to give to a man (early 30s) - one that can be worn everday / for streetwear and casual officewear / is trendy but also elegant / and is not "boring" / and a style that will last long.

Between the choice of a Hamilton Khaki King or Hamiton Viewmatic (both on bracelet and on black dial) which would be a better purchase/investment as an affordable automatic? The Khaki King seems to fit what I am looking for, but the Viewmatic is also awfully nice... some thoughts would be much appreciated.

Well, a Khaki is essentially a military timepiece. Austere and functional. A viewmatic is watch that can straddle the line between casual and dress. I have owned both, and would reach for a Viewmatic in more instances. Both are inspired by vintage designs, so neither is "trendy" in the true sense of the word...both are classic designs that have already stood the test of time.

I have a Khaki King that I really enjoy... but I also have a dressier watch for times when that's appropriate. I do think the Khaki King can be more versatile than just a "plain austere military watch" - particularly if you replace the band. I put a stainless steel deployant clasp on my original band, and really like the combination.

Seriously though, if you're going to go dressier, I'd opt for the viewmatic. Mike is right that they're both traditionally inspired and classic, but there's more dress appeal with the viewmatic.

As MBreinin said above, apples and oranges. Both are good. All Hamilton autos are good. I don't think one is a better investment than the other.

Personally, I'm not fond of the day wheel on the Khaki Field King Auto; I find it distracting.

Which Viewmatic? The Viewmatic comes in 3 sizes (37/40/44) and the dials/hands on the 37 and 40 are quite different from those of the 44mm.

I think the Timeless Classic Valiant Auto is another beautiful classic Hamilton, and meets the criteria you stated (unless you find it boring). But that should be governed by the tastes of the intended recipient, not yours or ours.

No Hamilton is "trendy", really. And that's a good thing.

No such thing exists; Hamilton makes various chronos but not a Viewmatic. Perhaps you meant the Jazzmaster chrono?

Thanks for your replies. It appears that the Viewmatic is regarded more as "dressy" although perhaps it might also look good as an everyday watch?

I suppose what I mean by "trendy" is that when wearing it, it feels smart and puts you in an 'upbeat' mood.. if that makes sense.

I've had this Jazzmaster Viewmatic for four years. I'm in my early 30's and it has worked well.

cioni2k do you have any invitation codes to spare for beyond the rack? I'm looking to get a good deal on a jazzmaster. Much obliged, thanks.

If I had the dough I would get a khaki next, but it looks like a Seiko or a Parnis is more in my price range

The Khaki is a very nice watch. For some reason, though, the word Khaki on the dial bugs me. I can't get over it. My vote would be Viewmatic.

I think the Viewmatic is perfectly acceptable for dress and casual.

Same here. I used to have one and for some reason the "KHAKI" really bothered me.
