I was thinking of a tan/mushroom plaid jacket with either a solid sky blue shirt or some kind of wide-striped bengal striped shirt in some shade of blue, or maybe pink, etc. In a medley of patterns, I thought a solid puff of navy hank might work to anchor it all. Probably senza tie. I am inclined to agree with you -- it seems like if you go solid, white linen always hits it out of the park, and a solid silk has a weird cocktail party vibe to it. I think if we discard all notions of wearing it with a dark worsted or suit and consider it in the context of thicker odd woolen jackets, it could work, but I'm still batting the idea around in my head. Which is why I asked

I have two robert talbot squares in cashmere. They work great in contrast to ties with sheen in them.

Thanks for the feedback, but what would be statement pieces except a tie and a pocket square here? Everything else is more or less basic, isn't it?

Yeah, individually they're all good pieces, but each piece on your look just looks EXTREMELY thought out: pocket square, skinny plaid tie, logo belt, distressed jeans, black jacket with piping, possibly french cuffs (can't totally tell)... Looks a bit much when put all together.

One or two of these pieces sans pocket square, or sand tie, for instance, or with more subdued jeans, or just the jeans and jacket, or whatever, in my personal opinion would look better. I'm guilty of this myself and I think it's an easy trap for guys who get into clothes to fall in to.

Jacket lapels, French cuffs with jeans, jeans with holes...

Thanks guys... there are no french cuffs, but get the point :)

Can't seem to find a picture of a satisfactory use of a black [solid or patterned] pocket square with a suit or sportcoat.

Any out there?

^ Thanks, S.F.

It seems that a black pocket would also only work with black shirts or some sort of evening and dark monochromatic schema.

In this manner it would not be so much as an accent but rather a part of an overall ensemble.
