I disagree that people would be praising Lamont if Fielder found his way in. Just like people questioned Thompson when he sent Ichiro to dance around Wieters. People's reactions were mostly what a bad send but great play by Ichiro.

In the World Series, that early in the game with no outs, one ought not gamble!

I've had time to cool off a bit about Gene Lamont. IMO, common sense dictates that one does not send a 300 pound Prince Fielder around 3rd base. Berry or Jackson...maybe. But he did. It was a gamble that, if it paid off, we'd all be singing the praises of Lamont.
The elephant in the living room is the fact that we cannot produce runs. It has been our "sin" for most of the season. That's why we spent most of the season behind the White Sox. For a team that was built to make runs, we fall short of all expectation.
While things are not good, it's not over, yet.
We are coming home.
We get the DH
We still have good pitching on deck.
We will face RH pitching.
We always do better against really good pitching.
In the '68 World Series, the Tigers were down 3-1, and then they came back to win three in a row.
Temperature, tomorrow, around game time will be around the low 40s and dropping.
The Giants are the real deal. And, on a good day, so are the Tigers. Play ball!

I highly recommend a book that was published just a few months ago: "Summer of 68 The Season That Changed Baseball, and America, Forever" by Tim Wendel

While the Tigers/Cardinals match-up is the centerpiece of the book, the greater story is what happened in the world around it. The author, who I believe was not even yet born in '68, brings fresh eyes to the story. The book reads almost like a novel. There are stories that I had never heard of and some that I had forgotten.

If Fielder's left foot didn't slide past the plate, thus requiring the right shin/knee to touch home plate first, he would have been safe.

If he slid head first like a regular athletic ball player should be able to do he would have been safe too. Alas, he's a 300 pound lug who barely gets by playing first base.
