Tanning

What's the most effective way to tan (outside, not in a tanning bed)?

Should I buy/apply a special lotion? Should I wear sunscreen? How long?

I've found that exposure to the sun causes me to tan. This is just anecdotal evidence, though.

You don't need any special lotion, just exposure to the sun's UV radiation. A tan is simply a self-defense mechanism of your skin, it creates melanin to help protect it from the UV.

Keep the initial exposure to 15 minutes on each side. Seriously. It sounds like it's too short of a time but it isn't when you just start out. You'll avoid a painful burn that way. Then slowly increase the time during subsequent sessions.

Well, if you want to be detailed, you'll want to find out your skin type, latitude, and time of year. I've seen charts and based on them and from them it's possible to figure out how long to stay outside with out burning. Basically stay out in the sun long enough so that you do not burn your skin. Avoid wearing sun screen during that time. Once you reach the point where a sun burn will develop slather on sunscreen or head indoors. With that, you'll slowly build up a tan.

Tanning is just not healthy. Just dress to compliment your complexion.

You're azn.

Tanning is fine. Sunburn is not. Do whatever it takes not to get burned. Long term your skin will get saggy/wrinkled from tanning, so at least minimize the sun exposure on your face. A big hat is best, don't trust sunscreen.

Sit under a tree in the shade for a few hours from 12-3pm. You will get a more even tan that way from indirect UV rays.

Are you a ginger by any chance? Are you fair haired and pale skinned?

You have the potential to look like an overbaked lobster!
