Bananas are genetically fucked anyways. They only remotely resemble wild bananas. They all come from an incredibly small gene stock, and the fruit called bananas your grandparents ate is a different species than the fruit you call a banana. That species of genetically weak stock was almost totally wiped out decades ago. What we know as a banana today was once considered a really crappy, small, tasteless version that's harder to transport and keep. It just so happens that it was more tolerant to the strain of plant disease that wiped out all the real bananas. Oh, and currently the newer strain of banana plant is being attacked by a new adapted version of the same disease that wiped out it's predecessor.

As each day passes, I feel more and more empathy for Lish. Poor girl.

whats even worse is whatever they spray bananas with to preserve them, once you pick the first banana from the bunch, the rest won't last long.

just for the record, the only GMO fruit or vegetable grown or sold in the United States is the Hawaiian papaya. everything else is the result of traditional cross-breeding. what happened with bananas has happened with lots of different fruits over the years. people want the cheapest possible food, so farmers choose varieties that grow easily and produce lots ... not the ones that taste best. this is nothing new. until about 1915, all limes were key limes. a hurricane wiped out the groves and when they replanted, they went with the heavier bearing persian lime, despite the fact that the flavor wasn't nearly as good.
strawberries are, imho, the poster child for how fruit breeding has gone wrong in this country, but remember that it's all in response to consumer demand. people love strawberries, so over about the last 15 years they have been turned from a spring treat into a year-round staple ... parsley for the breakfast plate. the new varieties have been chosen because they are firmer and ship better, even though great strawberries are, by definition, tender.

Can't wait for the day when an apple is available in the shape of an orange, and vice versa.
