Sometimes Customs will examine the contents and reassess the value. I got nailed for an additional $208 in duties on a pair of Lobb loafers a couple on months ago. A month after that a pair of G&G showed up w/o any duties. It's a crapshoot.

Geopolitics comes into play. If you're in the U.S then try Allen Edmonds first, or else you oughta know your customs before trying to order abroad. Within Europe there's no fuss with import duties.

Just received my Shakespeares today just 3 days after ordering them. Would've been 2 but I missed the UPS guy yesterday. The shoes are fantastic. Unfortunately I got hit with a $28.60 duty. Nonetheless still satisfied with the purchase. Just something to keep in mind for future purchases. I'm in NYC btw.

I just got hit with a $48.00 "brokerage" fee from UPS for a couple pair. I asked the delivery man what the "brokerage" charge was for and he told me he did not know exactly. I wonder how Fed-Ex stacks up against UPS fee wise.

My complaint is they (the driver) should be able to give you an itemized "brokerage" bill in return for your payment. I have the Shakespeare II as well and its a fine shoe. I think it is made by Loake.

Fedex brokerage is something like $25 + $5 "advancement fee".
This is in additon to what you owe to uncle sam.

DHL fee is around $10 but they've messed up the assessments twice; once in my favor and one in the gubmint's favor. It was only a few dollars so not worth fighting.

Both Fedex and DHL will deliver your package and then send you a detailed bill later.

UPS and USPS hold your package hostage until you pay them.

My experience is that Fed Ex is similar in this respect. My azn suppliers were careful to tell me to use the sorry ol' USPS, and make sure that the invoice tag was less than $1000. The post office does nothing, allowing this to fall upon US Customs and the buyer to straighten it out, and evidently Customs does not consider any transaction of less than $1K worth its attention.

I would bet that this **** is a great source of scam income for UPS and Fed Ex.

Queston regaridng the Herring 026 last - is the consensus to size down one full US size or a half US size. The website is not clear.
