I have a friend who's into fitness and health, so he influenced his 9-year old son to do yoga with him. I'm since then curious about this father-son hobby. I was searching a video about yoga for kids and this is what I found.

I've heard so much good things about yoga, but I want to know if this thing works for children as well. Just curious because this can be a transformation on the recent trend of kids engaging into violent games as a hobby.

yoga for kids is marsupialed. they should be outside playing sports and climbing trees. one should start some basic yoga as a part of a stretching routine if they play sports at a high level(starting varsity soccer, football, basketball) and serious weight training regimines.

i think kids wouldn't be able to focus and relax enough for yoga and would probably find it very boring.
Let them run around like the maniacs they are at that age.

A couple of years ago, the Indy Humane Society offered a yoga class for dogs.

Nothing wrong with yoga for kids as long as it is in addition to the usual kid stuff of just running around like madmen. My wife learned yoga as a kid - she is really knowledgeable on yoga as a result and we do the asanas routinely now at home. My wife grew up in a Hindu household, so clearly yoga was part of her daily spirituality and it was a rather natural thing to do. In a Western household, it might be a feel a bit more forced for kids as yoga is not a natural element in Western culture and they won't be mature enough to appreciate its value.

I can see a definite positive effect of incorporating some elements of yoga into a child's exercise regime. So many things require good balance and flexibilty so why not?

I agree. There are so many positive aspects of yoga that would benefit kids, I think.

What about marsupialed kids doing yoga?
I'm an Autistic Support teacher and my autistic kids have been doing yoga for the past 6 months in school. It has done wonders to help them refocus in their classes, become excited about something new and assist them in self calming strategies, who under normal circumstances would be having meltdowns. Normally my students go home after school and play videogames and watch tv but doing yoga helps in their flexibility and pushes them both physically and mentally when performing some of the intermediate poses.

That's actually a novel idea.

I've signed up in other forums and asked whether they see yoga as a great hobby for kids and most of them said yes. Someone also shared her experience buying an instructional video for her two-year old kid. I couldn't believe it at first but posted some pictures of her daughter following the poses from the video. It's cute and she seemed to be having fun.

weird...Yoga is for old Indian dudes not kids. Jungle gyms work the same muscle groups chimps and the greater apes work. Ever see a Chimps shoulders? Freakin beasts! Even little baby Chimps can swing from thier shoulders for hours at a time. Ever see a 40 year old fat dude climb a tree? Not cool.
