I know this is pretty upper body heavy.

No ****.

I would be up for adding more lower body, but not sure what to do.

Squats and deads fill the bill nicely.

I have avoided squats and deadlifts because of concern for form and hurting myself.

Srsly duderino, the last 20+ pages have been dedicated to dishing out advice to toasty who's starting out, among others there have been numerous tips and videos on squatting and DLing.

You should add squats and deadlifts. Just learn to do them right.

You should probably only work on either squats or deadlifts, but not both.

So my gym does not have free weights, but it does have a pretty wide range of machines. In an (im)perfect effort to replicate the squat I start by using the leg press machine. I start by bringing the plate that my feet press against as close to my body as possible. I do this in an effort to replicate the "ass to grass" aspect of squatting. Next, I adjust the pad that my back rest against such that I am leaning back rather that looking directly at the feet plate so as to imitate the form that my back and hips would take during squats.

Since this machine only addresses the "below the waist" component of squatting I also use a machine to work the back erectors and I do some core work.

Are there any other muscle groups that I am missing?

Time to get a new gym.

Yes, all of the stabilizers involved in managing a free barbell and most of your back. A leg press is a leg press, it doesn't work out your back, no matter how much you "lean back".

Oh, jesus, here we go with the chorus of bullshit. "get a new gym." "find a decent gym that has a squat rack." "build a rack in your garage. I'll put you on Santa's list for the parts."

Big - I'd ditch the smith squats. They're really not all that useful and are not good for your back. Tell me again what you have to work our your back and legs? I know we went over this before but I can't remember.

Core work should consist of bridges, leg raises, weighted core work, and all varieties in between.

^No Smith squats this time, it's literally just a leg press machine.

As for the other equipment, see this post.

Just do heavy snatches and overhead squats, you won't require any 'core work' after that...

Gyms filled with machines and no free weights are dumb. I don't care if they don't have a squat rack, but no barbell whatsoever? That's stupid.

AFAIK he was doing this on a leg press, not a smith machine. Smith machine squats are a terrible idea, that's a great way to **** up your knees.

I'd recommend pull-throughs as a good lower back workout, though it won't hit as many muscle groups as a squat.

Rowing machines done correctly can give you a decent run. There's not even a pull-up bar?

No freeweights Skip? Or a barbell and plates with benches?

Ok, so I'm not as anti machines as everyone else on here. My basic premise is that you have to work with what you've got. I would utilize each and every one of those leg machines. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. You can also work in bodyweight squat work and plyometric leg work.

If you want me to mock you up something let me know.

My box squats absolutely sucked today. I knew I shouldn't have overwork my lower back last week, really make you realize how much a strong lower back is important for the squat. I did try paused squats though and they sure are an awesome exercise. Will help me get stronger in the hole :slayer:
