Here you go... AE Walnut Shell versus Alden Cigar Shell... Of course the colors vary and the AEs are about 2 years old now and the Aldens have been worn three times (and are in dire need of brushing).

How does AE Walnut compare to Ravello?

Thoughts on the Patriot loafer?

Anyone know of a store that has it for less than msrp that qualifies for AE price matching?

Calf or shell?

Ravello generally has more red to in it. I can take a photo tomorrow if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Out the box, AE walnut appears lighter to me. But, my AE Strands have darkened a bit and my ravello shell has lightened a bit, especially across the vamp. Now, their difference in color is slight and, I suspect, mostly due to the difference in the sheen of the different leathers.

I wear my AE walnut belt with either.

Im in between sizes but went ahead with the AE plunge. I bought a pair of Fifth Ave's in size 7.5D and Strands in size 8D.

The FAs are breaking in slowly but still very snug on the sides. The strands are still fitting, but I'm worried they'll loosen too much.

Any chance there is a slight size difference between the two even though they are on the same last? Should I size down to the 7.5 or stay on the 8?

The Morgan doesn't look as nice as it does online. Don't like the burnishing look.

I'd hate to see them in navy.

I wish AE would get away from these "experiments" and focus on more classics. I think bringing back the Mora and adding an NST Boot was a step in the right direction.

Have you considered 7.5E? Many (including me) have to go down a 1/2 size and up a width on that last. I've found that if the sides are tight they probably will remain that way although the overall shoe may loosen a little.

Holy Venetian Shoe Cream Batman!!

I picked up a bottle of VSC this week at the Freeport AE outlet. They must have just started carrying it. I've always used Mac Method with my shell footwear and a bit of Renovateur 3-4 times a year. I decided to give VSC a shot and found the results quite impressive.

I didn't take any 'before' shots but I'm certainly pleased with the 'afters'. I didn't even buff after brushing. This was just a quick application of VSC and ~45 seconds of brushing per shoe. I've always thought that shell footwear with an unadorned toe makes for an excellent canvas to showcase the material's inherent sheen. The Leeds and Alden boot are virtually glowing with just a bit of VSC. The brogued Macneil looks great as well.

They are "repairable" theoretically in that a cobbler could try to glue the ****** plasticated sole back onto the ****** plasticated leather, but let's not continue with this, eh?

Check out those links, and the links to which they link, and the linked links' monks.  That way happiness lies.

Thanks for the responses and links. To be clear, I appreciate the value of well-made shoes which is why I own 6 pair of AE. I was mainly trying to understand how one could determine if a shoe was in fact Goodyear welted just by looking. As you pointed out in your post to which you linked, as you experienced, sometimes it can be difficult. For a shoe that I may wear only occasionally (black cap toe, for instance) one of the J&M Goodyear things may be a viable option.

I'll check the links to the retailers you posted as well. I'd love to check out some Loake, Meermin, Carmina, etc. however I just haven't found any place to try them on. Any ideas? I live in the Boston/Providence area. I could take a chance with eBay or one of those retailers but it may cost me some money to get it right. As mentioned, my feet are a bit odd so I'm looking for all options for decent footwear.

Appreciate the response and making me now think of dick skin every time I see a cheap pair of shoes.
