Looking for suggestions in this range. I really like the wings and horns service boot, but there is no way I'm spending $700 them. I don't want a capped toe box, like the LL bean Katahdins have. What options do I have? They should be comfortable too, maybe this is too much to ask, ha.

OP, I know you said you didn't want the katahdins, but for anyone else reading, they are the best value boot out there. They will probably last me a lifetime. The leather is thick and durable. They are also goodyear welted, have a vibram sole and Chippewa will do a full re-heel/resole for only $60. Can't beat it. If you contact Dayton, you might be able to get the service boot (non wings and horns distressed) if they still have them. Somebody here on the forum did that for, I think, around $400 Canadian.

Jokerman, Who's that in your avatar? Gave me a half-chubb.

The PS ricards are spot on for what I want, but at $600 retail I'd have to find a killer deal to get them. I'm looking for this sleeker build, not really interested in the GT, Indy, or that epaulet work boot -they are more bulky than I want.

I emailed Dayton a couple months ago asking if they had a service boot and this is the picture they emailed me with of their "service boot" its not even a boot...did I email the wrong dayton (daytonboots.com)?

I think you'll have to call them and try to get a hold of their factory store. I don't remember who it was but he said he got them at the Dayton store in Vancouver.

Katahdins' biggest fault is that its pretty slippery on ice, isnt it?

Check out the F+B, they have a couple of style that is very similar to Ricards. Price point for retail is the low 400s. You can't find it in your price range when its on sale.

I've been searching for a similar item, and I'm not sure if they appeal to you, but I like brogued boots, Grenson has two models, Fred and Sharp that come in a couple of different colours that you could get from pediwear for around ~250 I would think, and that will include trees. Thats about the best value I think I've found. From all accounts Grenson makes an very good product for that price range.
