Interestingly, if you DO get the details right, people notice. They can't pinpoint exactly what it is, but they do notice.

I've gotten compliments on clothing items that cost me $5 (or less), and I've been approached by girls even when I was wearing the slummiest gym clothes.

The way our society is, there is so much leeway for how a man dresses, the bullseye for "getting it right" is about as big as the pacific ocean.

So, wear what you want, take pride in it, but generally speaking, no one cares. It's really amazing how little people care about men's fashion sense, even though we pay so much attention to it.

Your point?

But seriously, I agree to an extent. I care about the details only insofar as they please me. I don't care about them for anyone esle's benefit.

i really dont get this. you dont even see yourself for more than a couple min a day unless you spend a lot more time in front of the mirror... do you just get a lot of self satisfaction knowing that some detail on your jeans or jacket or shirt exists, even though you cant see it during the day and other people wont notice it?

seems really egotistic

You're wrong. What's egotistical about not relying on external validation? The reverse seems so to me. It's about having fun with what you're wearing. I don't think it's any more egotistical than enjoying the points of a movie you're watching, a book you're readng, the car you're driving, or an album you're listening to.

you said "i dont care about [details] for anyone elses benefit" abstract from the object to make things easier: "i dont care about anyone elses benefit" AND WOOHOO I WIN!

Re: Andyliu52

That's the most marsupialed logic I've seen in a long time. The first statement is arbitrary, the second is blanket and general, of course he would care about other people's benefit in other areas, but as far as details are concerned, it makes no difference to him if people notice them.

Oh and this thread is pretty silly too, Lel was on the money, a good example of details that people don't consciously notice is graphic design, whereby a better design will be more aesthetically pleasing as it has better juxtapose and consistencies throughout the layout, of which joe somebody will never be able to pinpoint but still be able to appreciate.

Same argument goes for almost any hobby really, you can't expect the uneducated in an area to have the same level of understanding of a certain part of the hobby as the educated.

Details? Only details I care about are leaving the tags on my gear so people can see how big my bank roll is.

Then my Hyundai keeps em guessing.

I stay mysterious.

on the serious side of things:

This is pretty true as it relates to good design and what seperates a good designer from the rest, it's the ability to make something totally cohesive and asthetically pleasing without resorting to using drop shadow on everything because it looks cool.

Obviously in high school or college no one cares about the details. But in the working world - mine, anyway - people do notice and do care. It's important to look good.

A lot depends on where you work and how you spend your time.

the logic is flawless. if i said something like

"i dont care about details to anyone elses benefit" it might not sound selfish, but what about stuff like

"i dont care about my body odor to anyone elses benefit"

this is obviously selfish because its basic respect to take showers so you dont smell terrible, but who am i to decide which objects when inserted into the form of the sentence make the sentence selfish?

so instead i abstract from the object and just assess whether or not the form itself is selfish like this:

"i dont care about anyone elses benefit"

and since this is obviously selfish, then any object inserted into this form also produces a selfish sentence.

voila magic logic at its best!!!!!

It's not like the fetishization of material culture is some alien concept. Dressing well boosts your self esteem, gets you compliments, and if you're an aficionado, puts you in a better mood than if you were sitting around in a Pilgrim buttondown from Walmart with a pair of polyester pants on.

Appreciating the small details on clothing (MOP buttons, selvedge, felled seams, etc etc) is the exact same thing as appreciating the small details on any material object. These aspects of clothing are the lugs on a bike frame, the lights on a vintage car, the taste of food, etc etc.

How has no one mentioned Fight Club? Those who are in the know, will notice.

For example, today on the train I saw a man in a nice, well tailored suit. Upon closer inspection, I saw he had terrible box-toed Kenneth Cole shoes. Ok, so not everyone where bespoke, or even AE. Then I saw his shirt and tie. Both had a vibrant and tight pattern. It actually hurt the eyes when you looked close enough. I feel this is a perfect example of someone who would look good to uninitiated observer, but to those who find these details important, it was excruciating.

...Also, I think he had some food on his collar.

But I also agree that once you get into that ballpark no one really cares. I'm 16 and I go to high school and I don't feel like buying $1xx on a shirt or jeans but I try and emulate the style and one day when this girl said my $20 (originally $50) jeans had a really nice color and she would wear them if they were my size this other guy said "He always dresses good" even though I usually rotate between $10 Uniqlo graphic T-shirts and I just throw on a Gap/BR sweater that doesn't fit me that well in the winter and I rotate between my blue and black uniqlo slim jeans.

Another winner of the American school system!
