I have a pound mutt now, but had Newf's as a kid. If they thought you were being threatened , they'd get very aggressive- and no-one wants to cross a pissed-off Newfoundland. I used to harness ours to a taboggan and go for joy rides.

Pretty bad in the summer- not so much the rest of the year. We did need a towel in front of the water bowl though. We had one of those ****** pools for the dog- he'd snooze in it in the summer-hang his head over the side and snooze in the water.

When I was growing up my grandmother had a Great Pyreness named Cyree.

Sweetest dog ever. She would actually let me ride her when I was very small.

I would have loved dogs if they were not so needy, did not pee themsleves all the time, managed to get crap out of their fur by themselves, did not stink, were not eating shoes or messing around my clothes, did not fart, licked their paws clean when they come from outside and did not bark for no reason.

Dog being kept in a city apartment = public nuisance.

I got a doby, best ever. Bishop is his name, he was going to be shown, but had a white square on his chest, so no go. First dog I didn't rescue, but he's great, this breader bred for tempermant, I have never seen an ounce of anger from him, and his demeanor towards other dogs is great. I went w/ bob/crop - i felt bad for the cropping, but it, to me, makes him what he is/was bred for. when i got him at 7 weeks, his paws were the size of his head.. he was the runt of the litter as well:

and now, around easter time. he's about 90-95lbs - we run a few miles a day, really big chest, not as tall or lean as most dobermans, a solid mass of muscle.

I have a lab/whippet mix from the humane society. She lays around contentedly until I take her outside for a run, does not pee herself, has very short hair that essentially cleans itself and does not smell bad, refuses to chew anything but her own toys, farts far less often than I do, can be coerced to wipe her feet on the mat by the entryway, and rarely barks, except if someone she does not know enters the apartment.

All in 750 sqft. In a city. I don't even know if my neighbors know I have a dog. A lot of the problems you listed come down to bad training and crappy food.

Here's the thing about Patts . . . the ones that I've seen (including Jagds) will tear your house apart if they hear a mouse scratching. So if you have some property to take them hunting, go for it. Otherwise, do your research carefully.

That said, seriously cool dog. I'd love to own one.

Agree that Patterdales are "seriously cool dogs." I'd strongly consider owning one, but like a lot of the best, unspoiled dog breeds, they really need a job of work to do. They are really too high-drive, high-energy to make good urban companion dogs--at least so people knowledgeable in the breed tell me--which is what I am looking for.
