I took me years to pick it up because I thought it was just another boring police procedural but now it's one of my favorite television shows, alongside deadwood. But I've found that the majority of people that actually watch the show and don't love it are either women or people that don't really get 'the american dream' (sweeping hand motion).

Thought she was just an actor until I saw her on an episode of No Reservations. Had no idea she used to be (and I guess still is) involved in Baltimore drug dealing.

She was actually just one of many people who acted in roles on the show, but who are actually part of "the game" or BPD. The real life Sgt Landsman, Omar, and Avon Barksdale are just some that make appearances.

Currently in the middle of my third viewing of Season 3. I had a friend the entire series on my iPod and it makes working out so much more tolerable.

I just finished the first season las night.
Dam, this show is amazing. The Plot, the actor, the conclusion.
Everything (but the suit fit) is EPIC.

The 2nd season start tonight.

The 2nd season is the one that benefits the most from rewatching. The first time I watched it I thought it was dull compared to the first. There is less excitement and I felt that the show had lost focus by introducing an entire new environment and set of characters. But that season also has one of the show's best performances and best characters in Frank Sobotka. Just a great character, as honest and noble as he is corrupt. Sort of like Omar in that sense, although much more subtle. Really brings home what I think is the central theme of the show, which is that there are no good guys and bad guys, just people who do good and bad things.

+1. Thought it was pretty lame when I first saw it. I now consider it one of the better seasons. Very ambitious of them to take on new environment (suppliers, ports, street crime, cops) and they did a great job weaving it together - patiently I might add. A season like that is why Season 5 disappointed me so much. There was no such subtlety in the handling of the media.

Keep in mind, the 5th season was as much about David Simon showing The Baltimore Sun how he was write (see what I did there) and they were wrong. FWIW...

great show, but i worked for the editor that simon hated at the sun and he was the best editor i've ever had. absolutely amazing guy. and, of course, he let simon go for a year each to do his series and books and then simon turned around and bit him on the ass for having called the work "dickensian" ... which is about as good a description of it as i can think of. i definitely think this is another case of trust the art, not the artist. guy seems like a total dick.

A buddy of mine was a newspaper journalist for years with the NYT and a few others, and he hated that arc in season 5. He said that until that point, he really believed in the authenticity of the scenarios the show depicted, but once it got to something that he knew about, it seemed really over the top and cheesy. Then again, I have had people tell me that the show's depiction of political campaigns and the way a Mayor's office runs was about as realistic as anything you will see on TV, so maybe Simon was just too close to the subject to really capture it. After all, nuance and axe grinding don't really go together.
