    Did some research on this. It appears that the apron fronted design aimed to add water resistance by lifting the seams higher. In derbies and oxfords the seams usually go all the way to the sole, but with apron they stay higher, except the split-toe seam for which there are some magical seam...

    I think Pembrokes go with anything! But I do see your point. They are not most formal - however, I find that they magically blend with anything. Why not give it a try? I am quite sure it will not be a mistake and you will find use for a pair even if you later decide not to pair them with a suite.
