I would say, scent needs to be in the top 5.
A scent can say as much as your shoes or your tie.

Infact, I would venture to say that if you are deficient in one of the 5 major areas (watch, suit, shirt, shoes, accessories), that a well matched scent will more than compensate for this.
Many women, and men will remember that you smelled good and unique much more than your tie, your umbrella, or shirt.

1) A well tailored dark suit
2) A shirt with a collar that flatters the shape of your face and neck
3) Great shoes, probably in brown/tan because a great, rich brown is more interesting than black
4) A nice watch
5) Something that shows individuality and personality like a unique ring, a vintage portfolio, special eyeglasses. I especially like it when someone has one antique or heirloom item like their fathers cuff links or watch.

Use a lighter, carry a pen, use a cell phone, married, and carry tissues. 1 out of 5 is not bad.

Okay, I'm going to be a little bit personal here, so I'm not sure this applies to "every" stylish man:

1. A dark grey, three-piece suit (runner-up: French navy solid or pinstripe);
2. White cuff and collar shirts, in very lightweight fabric without too loud a stripe on the body (runner-up: white broadcloth with cutaway collar);
3. Black tie with small white dots (runners-up: shepherd's check, navy grenadine or basketweave);
4. Black zip-sided Chelsea boots (runners-up: black or brown wholecuts or monks);
5. An awesome watch, ideally Breguet or IWC (runners-up: A. Lange, Cartier Santos).

I think with the obvious accompaniments of underwear, socks and white pocket handkerchief, I could happily wear that every day for the rest of my life.

Cheers,

FP

it was something i remembered from when i was pledging. every pledge had to carry those items. there's a story that goes along with that but i doubt it'd be proper to post it.

What a nice thread - bravo to those who've resurrected it.

My 2-penneth:

1. A fitting, simple, two-button, single-breasted suit.
2. A nice wristwatch (preferably mechanical, or a quartz with technical merit).
3. Good leather shoes (brown or black).
4. Good leather belt (to match the aforementioned shoes).
5. A really nice, slim fitting shirt in a subtle, solid colour.

I like the 'nice teeth' and a great smile helps.

5. A perfectly fitted shirt so important it gets its own place in your closet.
4. A killer pair of black shoes.
3. The perfect solid, versatile suit.
2. A great tailor who knows your style.
1. A stylish girl who likes her man in nice clothes and inspires him to look his best when it counts. It almost always counts.

I am lucky enough to have all 5.
