Actually it's not that big of a deal. It's actually decent advice if something isn't "Black Tie"; but, you want to wear black.

Pitt pulls it off....I think the black vest + black tie and suit gives enough of a tux flair and convinces me that he's not off to a meeting. As for the rest of them, I think they either look way to casual to be considered an alternative to black tie, or they look like they are dressed for the office. Is it just me?

+1 Too true. The Etro and the Prada look great for social occasions.

(I still can't tell from the picture if his shirt is light blue or white)

+1 Looks good, nice cut too.

To me, Pitt looks like the best of a bunch of bad examples. I know he's not off to a meeting because he's half-masting. I know for sure he's not off to black tie because he's half masting.

The only one of all these photos who did Black Tie well is Willie Brown. I think that for Black Tie events, tuxes should be a little fuller and more opulent than your average lounge suit. The super slim cut things look good in other situations, but they aren't black tie.

I think you have out-opuled me.

Actually, I have very little experience with Black Tie. I've been to two full-on Black Tie events in the last year and first time I didn't go with the grain but saw some great examples of people in very well fitted, elegant tuxes and was impressed, second time I did go with the grain (partly because the bride forced me to) and I was glad I did it.
