Depends on what you are tutoring. How about some more info?

Generally this type of thing is pretty casual.

someone's seriously going to trust you with their son/daughter and you can't figure out how to dress yourself?

Suit/tie = likely too formal

Speedos = likely too creepy

jeans/polo/decent t-shirt/khakis/shorts etc. etc. - likely all fine

This really isn't rocket science, but I am willing to come to your house and tutor you in getting dressed if need be.

I remember my personal tutors when I was a child were all suited & tied up little men with glasses and shiny shoes; but I think that was out of eccentricity rather than necessity.

I would just wear a blue shirt/oxford shirt, and casual trousers, and decent shoes. Keep a navy sports jacket in the car incase you turn up to a particularly smart house. I can tell you, I'd be pissed off if a personal tutor I hired for my children arrived in a t-shirt &/or shorts with dirty trainers.

I'm wondering if polos and jeans won't do?

I stand by my advice. You've actually been really annoying in that you haven't told us: how much you're charging per hour, what you're tutoring, who you're tutoring, and what education you have. Surely you understand that these sorts of things make a huge difference when it comes to dressing?

Why are you wasting people's time? If you think so, just wear the ******* things. It's not life or death.

I am charging twenty pounds an hour. I am tutoring A level students (i.e. junior and senior high school students) in Physics, Chemistry and Maths and I am a second year undergraduate student at a reputable UK institution.

Dressing smart will mean you don't get a call back. The kids have got to like you, which means dressing casual so you're approachable.

Dress in a lab coat, smell strongly of toluene.

I strongly recommend to go with classic morning dress (black morning coat, striped trousers, waistcoat, white shirt and tie) including a top hat. If the tutor of my kids would show up more casual than that I'd fire him immediately and hand in a written complaint at his reputable UK institution!

Morning coat? What is this, a footballer's wedding?! I wouldn't let any adults, let alone tutors, near my children in anything less than a frock coat.
