Sherry the [Bahamas] Cherry:

And Shef the Schefflera! Not sure which one will be the front just yet. May also take of the very lowest branch but we'll see. My thing is that there is this root that's interesting to look at but I think I like the other side as a front better. I don't know. Thoughts? (Don't say anything about the wiring).

Leading candidate for front:

Neat root with the lowest branch I'd cutoff.

Honestly though, I'm not entirely sure I like them/will keep them.

Some of my girlfriend's dad's bonsai (he has hundreds though) I think she said the first one he has been keeping for 50 years, despite it being small and not so complex.

Nice. I like the smaller ones and they can be more difficult to take care of.

I'll ask her to. She's at her parent's in Fukuoka but she's going to Tokyo tomorrow or the day after so it may be too late

The dad has been working on these things for as long or longer than he has been married, I think. They're the one reason he doesn't want to move house, and his main stress in life is about who will take care of the bonsai when he dies, because neither of his daughters will.

Maybe me? I said I would, but that's kind of like giving a 3-star kitchen to someone who knows how to make kraft mac and cheese. =\\

btw, I can't fully understand my gf's notes about the bonsai because my Japanese is a bit weak, but I think she mentioned something about cracking the trunks and then covering the raw edges in wax to get certain effects? Am I getting this right? I think that is referring to the second tree in the first set I posted a couple days ago, maybe candle wax down the raw edge of the trunk.

Close. Remove the bark of limbs then apply lime sulfur to create the dead white wood. The shari which is the dead trunk I think is similar.
