Noob here, question about shoe sizing....

Hey guys, just joined this place and I have to say the wealth of information available here is awesome!! I'm looking to buy a pair or two of new shoes for work. I settled on the Allen Edmonds strand shoes and I checked them out at nordstrom yesterday and boy am I glad I did. My shoes size is 10.5d as far as sneakers go, never bought anything different. Even my crappy pairmof Kenneth Coles is 10.5d but when I tried on the Allen Edmonds I had to go all the way down to a 9E!!! Is this normal?


Do all these high end shoes have a very different fit? I would love to order some nice shoes online which aren't available in stores but with thdramatic difference in size I found yesterday I'm very afraid to. I even measured my foot on the scale they have at nordstrom and it was still a 10.5. Also, I'm not sure how these shoes are supposedmto fit, meaning how much room should I have in front of my toes? Should it fit the same as my sneakers? Or should therre be more/less room in front? Sorry for all the questions but your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

every shoe/sneaker may run a different size. the best is to try b4 you purchase. a 10.5 in one make may be an 10 or 11 in another. i ALWAYS try unless i have/had the same make.

"Room in front of your toes" isn't the right thing to focus on. Focus on whether the widest part of the shoe lines up with the widest part of your foot. Then focus on whether the heel slips too much.

"Room in front of your toes" is how your mother decided if your kid shoes fit; don't focus on that (unless your toe is so close that it hits the front).

Thank your sir, that clears up a lot for me, the 10.5d Allen Edmonds were too tight cause my foot is to wide, they also seemed huge, so I went down in size till I hit 9, which seemed like a good fit but my heel was slipping because it was a eee, I had them order me a 9e to my house, hopefully it fits otherwise I'll havemto take em back to nordstroms. But now that you're telling me the room in front of the toes doesn't matter much, I may actually have to get a different size, but we shall see. Thanks again!


Btw it sucks that they fit all differently because not all shoes that I see online are available locally, what a PITA.

Lol, I used that a few days ago, it puts me at a 10.5E but when I tried 10.5s on, I felt like I was swimming in them at the store.

I tried that as well; that method put me as an 8E. However, when I went to a local store to try on some AE's for size, they measured me as an 8.5 C. Go figure.

Which AE shoes did you try on? I tried the strands and it seems that even AEs shoes fit different depending on the style.

the best thing to do is go to a brick and mortar store. waste a great deal of their time and get them to order like 10 pairs of shoes for you. then return all of them, yes even the ones that fit and buy them cheaper online. this is the widely accepted practice

I sense some sarcasm here. I ordered the shoes from nordstrom at the store, I don't plan on returning them unless they don't fit, in which case I'll have them order me a size that does fit. I was juts asking questions here for future reference, since there's always seem to be good deals in the B&S section, I can't really return shoes to a person on here if they don't fit....

Be aware that Allen Edmonds (and all shoemakers) have different lasts that fit differently. Some AE lasts are very narrow for the size.

It's not uncommon for shoemakers to use a "combination" last, where the heel is a relatively narrower width than than across the ball of your foot.

really the only way to ever be sure how a particular model of show will fit, even from the same maker, is to try it on.

I'll also note that I've generally found athletic shoes require a larger size (for me) then dress shoes, and that cheap brands I require a larger size then more established ones.
