someone suggested the prc200 from tissot, i have that watch and like it. Get compliments on it but rarely wear it. I would suggest swiss army as well, some of their watches look good for everyday wear.

To be honest, as much love as Seiko gets, if someone were looking to get a watch that looks like it cost a lot more than he pair, he should probably stay away from Seiko especially if you live in the U.S. I would also stay way from Citizen for that matter.

For $250, OP is better off buying a Burberry watch made by Fossil. People will think it is expensive being a designer watch and the quartz movement is pretty maintenance free so good for new watch owners.

An automatic Seiko black monster dive watch can be had for right around that price. You'll have to look around but it's doable.

+1 on the recommendation, the seiko monster is a huge value.. reliable movement and a great solid link bracelet.
It pays to check out watch forums, I got mine for $100!

I had the same decision to make a couple of years ago and went with the Hamilton Khaki Mechanical. It has held up very well and I still wear it all the time. The style may not be for everyone but it suits me well. One of my few pre-SF purchases that is still with me two years later with no regrets.

I am very impressed with the leather strap this watch came with. It is embossed Handcrafted in Germany and after much wear the thing is buttery soft, very comfortable and still looks new except for the creases. It matches up nicely against Horween Chromexcel if you care about that sort of thing.

I scored my Seiko Orange Monster for $100 on the watch forums as well - but ya gotta be quick! Save that 150, and put it toward a watch you really want if you get bitten by the watch bug...or maybe for mods to your Monster if you really come to love it (Yobokies mods look great)...Great automatic watch in terms of durability and aesthetics if your into dive watches.... ...I suppose worse case, if you bought a used Seiko Monster for a good price, chances are you can resell it later for probably the same price you bought it for...

I picked up a Laco automatic Pilot watch a month or two ago for 166 euros (200 USD). No shipping fee, just paid the customs tax I believe it was. About 12 USD.

I looked and they've now bumped it to 198 euros (240 USD) and looks like they are out of stock. I really like the simple and clean look. Not sure why they upped the price recently, but it's still in your $250 range.

I would spend $310 and get a Precista PRS-5 (just scroll down). Can't afford it right now but love that look. Also their PRS-10 costs the same amount as the J Crew Timex, but it doesn't suck.
