Is it ok to root for a sports team if you have no ties with that city?

So, let's say you have no ties to NYC, whatsoever. Is it okay to be a Yankees fan instead of a fan of your local team? Same with Boston and the Red Sox, New England and the Patriots, Dallas and the Cowboys and so on.

Well, is it?

In general, yes.

There are specific exceptions, of course. It's never okay to be a Yankees, Cowboys, or Chelsea fan unless you're a douche.

People who know nothing about sports are usually Red Sox and Eagles fans, Ive found.

Girls who want to be one of the guys are always eagles fans. 100%.

As long as you're not rooting for the Cubs, yes. (No offense Ron, b/c I know you have ties to the city. But you have to admit that 95% of Cubs fans A) don't know or care about anything related to baseball, and B) are douchey )

Yep. My NFL team-Raiders. NBA-Pistons. Live-NYC.
I played pop warner football and the name of our team was the Raiders.
I'm also an Isiah fan.....so Pistons.
I'm also a Mets and Islander fan..

Nope. Isiah played for the Pistons. I'm an "Isiah the player" fan.

How does one choose a non-local team to support?
Is it the uniform colors? The logo? A leading player?

My son-in-law is a fan of the Denver Broncos and the St. Louis Cardinals. He grew up in rural Minnesota. I doubt that he listened to KOA or KMOX.

Could be a player. Little league/pop warner team name that they player for. Etc.

People support teams for different reasons, half the fuckin population of NYC aren't NYers...but they live here, and vociforously support their teams. A buddy of mine, born and raised NYer, is a huge Broncos fan because his pop warner team was the Broncos.

For me:
NHL-Rangers (no ****)
NBA-Knicks
NFL-Giants
CFB-Crimson Tide
MLB-Mets
EPL-Man City
MLS-Whenever NYC gets an MLS Team (Red Bulls don't count)

But aside from hockey, CFB and EPL, I could care less, so I'll root for other clubs if theres a good story. Re: the Tide, to me they epitomise what old school college football is about...a southern school, great tradition, etc...so I always rooted for em...besides, Bear wore houndstooth, and thats just cool.

I say no. Given how teams are already a bunch of mercenaries, it is already bad enough. But if you aren't rooting for your hometown team, then you are probably being a fair-weather fan of another team.

Exception if your dad is from that city - but I'd say not any further in the past.
