You will eventually be correctly placed in the appropriate piece of the universe regardless of your grades.

They do matter because good grades makes you proud and that's an achievement in and of itself.

It depends upon what you want to do after you graduate.

They are important for getting your first job or two, and for graduate or professional school.

Yea, they're important unfortunately. If you are looking for a job straight out of college your GPA is going to be the only thing that recruiters care about.

Generally, yes. It will give you a lot better opportunities for internships and permanent jobs. There are countless opportunities I missed out on because my grades didn't meet the GPA minimum. However, a few fortunate breaks and working hard once in the door, negates such things.

Yes, nothing matters like grades except your parents being ludicrously wealthy. Sorry to hear you messed up. One bad grade isn't too terrible as long as your overall GPA is good.

If you're going to start your own firm directly out of college, then they won't matter at all. Well, I suppose they could matter if you decide not to hire yourself because your GPA is too low, but I wouldn't recommend that.

On the other hand, as other posters have mentioned, if you plan to work for another firm for a while before starting your own, grades will matter. If your grades are good overall, I wouldn't worry too much about one bad mark, but I wouldn't let it become a trend. One bad class isn't going to kill your GPA unless you're right at the cutoff (e.g. the job you want requires a 3.0 and this grade would move you from a 3.0 to a 2.99).

Grades are overrated. Dedication and will is more important then grades.

Post hoc reasoning/just-world fallacy, man.

I never liked working for grades and as a result, have "hit for the cycle": I have earned every possible grade on my transcript (with +/- also), from F to A, including a W (withdrew). I consider this to be an accomplishment (an honest D+ is not easy to get); my academic advisor is less than impressed.

But I wouldn't advise this course of action if you want to ever go to grad school or are trying to get into banking, consulting, or any other high-profile post-college occupation. I just happened to get lucky.
