I find it's good to challenge my prejudices. I can't see me seeking cordovan, but perhaps I'll try it if I cme across a pair at an unresistable price.

I'm sure Alden would oblige you. Ron Rider probably would too.

Yeah, they definitely don't have them in the NYC store. I guess you'd have to do the custom order thing.

I can see why some folks don't like it, as I always associated it with old-man shoes. But then I sold a few pairs of shell and acquired the shell bals somewhat unintentionally. With time, I started to see the appeal. All my pairs have been bought on pretty deep discount, but now I'd pay a premium for it in the right style.

I don't know the last, but the color, IIRC, is Martegani's mahogany. I like it better than the more commonly seen burgundy shell.

I bought both the AF53 and the AF21 used. I got the AF53 on Superfuture and the AF21 right here in the SF B&S forum. I had been looking for the whiskey longwings for some time. Last fall I e-mailed Alden of Carmel to ask when they would be making another run of that model. Adam told me that it might happen in 2009 but that all the shoes would be reserved for established customers, which I am not. I was lucky that another SF member spotted an old Want to Buy ad that I had forgotten about and offered me the shoes.

I find these more attractive than their Alden counterpart.
I visited Sky Valet last year when they were clearing out the Carmina shoes. I passed on a really nice pair of shell monk straps that in hindsight were perfect for me. They were a bit snug so I bought a pair of Alden bluchers instead. I really should have gotten the Carminas.

I have a fit issue with my Darlton's, too. My penny loafers fit best, but my wingtips and plain toe bluchers aren't comfortable for a long period of wear.
