More than anything, I was just surprised at how bland it was. I guess it got toned-down to English tastes. Since my colleague was from Bangalore I was hoping that they would spice it up for us. As for menus, most of what I saw seemed in line with what I see on menus at Indian places around SF.

I was also similarly nonplussed by the Thai food in England as well. One of my English colleagues raved about a place near Kings Cross, so we went on his recommendation and it was rather "meh". the Thai food Barims and I had was better, but still nothing to write home about.

Not true, maybe in the 70s, but plenty of amazing restaurants in UK today.

Maybe you should visit / try it before you talk?

I'm not a Brit, and I'd guess that you can eat much better here than in Sydney...

Ummm, think of it like Mexican food in the US. Lots of cookie cutter places, most of a middling standard, tuned to the gringo taste. There is one in every suburban neighborhood and the locals will tell you theirs is the best, but its always disappointing. But if you venture out into the ethnic neighborhoods it's a bit less comfortable (and there isnt an old white dude playing Buffett in the background while you sip your Bud Light / Frozen Margarita), but the food is a million miles away.

If you do come to London again PM me and I'll let you know where to go.

oops, I think I just offended the entire population of England, but you should see what we have to say about your beer, then you'd really be upset. I won't go into too much details.

actually I meant that as a question. In Australia, everyone I know likes their burger with bacon and egg. I love my burgers and they are best made at take-away joints (not MacDonald's, Burger King/Hungary Jack etc). So I was surprised noone mentioned it in this thread.

I don't think you would offend us with your thoughts on proper beer, we are long used to the fact most of the world population likes terrible tasteless stuff.
Your dislike of our superior beer is a fault in you, not the beer

Do it. Damn, this thread is making me think about Indian food.

Dont worry about offending if you have at least given something a try. If you have tasted it then it's your own opinion which is perfectly valid. Thing is... try it.

I dont like British ale. Last night I went to a place with an "ale appreciation" theme and I drank Guinness.

Funny you mention British beer though as Australia's beer culture comes from British ale and has actually turned itself toward lager (note I dont even mention Fosters)..... Shame that again you speak of what you do not know.

VB suuuuuuuuucks

Not british, but I do hang out in London now and then.

The beer is actually pretty good. All that crap about warm beer and stuff is mostly just a myth.
