I just got my Yohei Fukuda x Wildswans indigo blue card holder in elephant leather and I absolutely love it.

Made by hand in Japan this card holder is made out of elephant leather from Zimbabwe. The craftsmanship is impeccable and all stiches are even. The execution is perfect on that piece. It will serve many years.

I highly recommend it! You can find it on Yohei Fukuda’s newly launched website.

Importing elephant leather is illegal in CA, NY, and NJ.

At a time when many big name designers are fur-free and some are only using vegan leather, this guy is selling elephant skin.

Yet still I was able to buy ground bison meat in every supermarket in USA after near depopulation of that animal.

Here are the Tanzanian guidelines for export of exotic goods:
TANZANIA
Permits are required for the collection, harvest, trade and export of all wildlife, fisheries and forestry products in Tanzania. The export of products made from many threatened species is prohibited, such as rhino, cheetah, cycads and most elephant and leopard products. Exceptions include a limited number of legally hunted leopard and elephant trophies that may be exported. You will need a permit for hippopotamus and warthog tusks, reptile skins such as python and crocodile, zebra and antelope skins, corals, Giant Clams and all other shells, dead or alive, plants including aloes and some hardwoods, and all live animals including insects.

Hunting reserves are the source of all legally traded African elephant skins. It’s very similar to our deer season in the United States. Designers, manufactures, and leather enthusiasts should not feel emotional or have guilt for using elephant leather as they are not creating a demand rather using a by product.
Comments saying that legal CITES approved elephant leather is immoral or illegal are misguided.

Hmmm. I’m not sure I’d say ‘misguided’. It’s perfectly possible to accept the economic argument that the revenue from hunting permits provides much needed funds for conservation efforts and may help bring endangered species back from the brink, while at the same time feeling that it’s immoral to use products from endangered animals. It would be an example of cognitive dissonance if this were the only option to protect them, but it’s not. We could just fund conservation for no economic gain and, y’know, not kill elephants.

It’s a tricky and emotionally charged subject, but I’m not sure we should be too proud of the fact that “humans are basically monsters who will only protect endangered species if there’s profit to be made” seems to be the winning argument in this case.

The wallet would look just as good if it were made from a cow, by the way. We have lots of cows.

I completely disagree. I also have shoes made by Jan Kielman from elephant leather. It’s much better to utilize the skin and cherish the elephants it came from for many years to come rather than the skin rotting on the savanna or burned to dispose of.
I have seen elephant leather shoes, briefcases that have been around for 20-30 years and they are still beautiful and making their owners happy.
I agree with the point that by charging for hunting licenses more elephants can be saved in the wild by conservation organizations.
Elephant leather has much more beautiful texture than any cowhide or even calfskin will ever have. It’s also much more resilient and waterproof.
The same goes for hippo leather and shark leather. While I am all for conservation of these beautiful animals, I understand the economics behind conservation, hunting and leather trade.
