I'm getting married this year and need some advice :)

I've never worn a tuxedo during my adult life and want some help in picking my outfit.

I currently have a midnight blue lanvin tuxedo. Peak collared.

I paired it with a dark blue lanvin bow tie and a bibbed lanvin tuxedo shirt.

My questions are the following:

Should i be using a black bow tie instead?

What are your thoughts on wearing velvet slippers as compared to pantent leather shoes?

Should i wear cufflinks? I don't own a pair yet!

Do i wear a cummerbund and/or suspenders?

Pocket square or not? (I'll be wearing something on my lapel. Not sure if I'll use the flowers given to me on the day itself or if I'll buy one of those lapel pins?)

Lastly, should i use the flowers for my lapel or should i purchase a lapel pin? What kind of lapel pin would be suggested?

Sorry for the million questions! I don't really know how to dress like an adult! Ahahaha i appreciate whatever input i can get! Thank you in advance.

I prefer the blue bow, velvet slipper, floral lapel pin, cuff links. I like a pocket square but sometimes two things on one side can make you look out of balance. Your mileage may vary. I’m not a fan of cummerbund or braces but I keep my jacket buttoned when wearing a tux anyway.
The most important thing, and I can’t emphasize this enough..make sure your tux fits properly. If you don’t have a tailor, find one.
Congrats on your upcoming nuptials.

Get a black bow tie in a silk that matches the silk of the facing of your jacket (satin or grosgrain). Then, you can decide which you want to wear. Personally, I'd go with black, but it's your wedding and it's up to you. I don't care for velvet slippers, so my advice would be to select black patent oxfords.

Your shirt should have cuffs that require cufflinks, and perhaps also studs. Obtain some. I hope that the trousers that go with your dinner jacket are reasonably high-rise. If they are, then my advice would be to wear braces (suspenders). If you don't, you will be constantly hitching up your trousers and that's not a good look. And, yes, get a cummerbund. It completes the look. I would recommend black to go with the bow tie.

Whether you wear a pocket square or not is your choice. If you're wearing a flower in your lapel you may find the addition of a pocket square (white linen only) to be too busy. Or you may not, again it's up to your personal preference.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I'll keep what you guys said in mind while i go shopping ahahahah

I'm leaning towards the velvet slippers (just because it seems it would be more comfortable, I'll be on my feet for at least 12 hours hahaha)

I'm undecided on the pocket square because there might be too much going on with the flower or lapel pin. So I'll try and see how they look together.

Is it a "rule" that the bow tie and cummerbund match?

I went ahead and bought the blue one(looks to be a dark navy) because my fianceè liked it more.

Thanks again for the help!!!!

What you described is pretty much my outfit going forward!

Just have to search for some nice cufflinks for the wedding!

Still on the fence with the pocket square tho. I don't want it to be overwhelming with too much going on but I'll see how they look together.

Is it a rule? More or less. It just looks better. I would recommend getting a black tie and cummerbund at some point, for non-wedding use.

Velvet slippers probably are considered by most as meant for less formal, more evening-oriented events. Plus, unlike dress shoes, they are unlikely to offer much arch support and probably will lead to foot discomfort after many hours of mostly standing. At a wedding, it would be strange to sit down and benefit from slipping off footwear.
