+1 on a stowa. will probably run at the upper limit of your budget though.

I forgot about Stowa, yes, they make amazing watches for the price, the movements are quite something for the price range.

Also, the designs are simple, timeless, not an ounce of ostentatiousness

Above Seiko, Hamilton and Oris in my books, though the price is about double your price range. I would still consider it though, if you can afford it, don't buy it if you can't, but if you can, your dad will love it and never get tired of its beauty. With watches you definitely get what you pay for, moreso than clothing.

Stay away from ESQ, terrible quality for the price, they may appear nice but really not worth your trouble, sorry to burst your bubble. (hey that rhymed) Please, don't get an ESQ.

Some of their watches use a standard ETA movement, and some use a handwound Unitas movement. COSC isn't standard on the watches, so the movements aren't as amazing as you would think.

They look mighty good though.

Yeah, there are better fit and finishes out there for the price range however, I also find them to look a tad pretentious.

Thanks, I appreciate the help. I'm not really a watch guy, but the utilitarian look of it caught my eye when I saw it posted on a graphic blog.

check out Fortis. Some of them can get pretty complicated but the Pilot Professional and Spacematic models look great. They might be a little over your price range tho, I think they usually retail for around $600-800 depending on where you get it from.
