I've brought this up in GNAT and WAYWRN: I find warm colored fits more difficult to put together than cooler fits. I've come up with three explanations for this:

a) I lack the requisite pieces to successfully put together warm fits on a regular basis

b) Warm fits are inherently more difficult to work with in achieving something aesthetically pleasing

c) Warm fits are, given what we are used to seeing when it comes to classic menswear, more difficult to work in in achieving something aesthetically pleasing

d) I suck at warm fits.

I am thinking that it is some combination of (a) and (c). I won't rule out (d), but I've seen too many wonderful warm fits in MC casual and SW&D contexts to say (b).

On an aside, I think @Betelgeuse , of those that regularly post fit pics, is the most proficient when it comes to regularly posting warm colored outfits.

You're such a nerd, Clags. I've seen you put together "warm" fits plenty of times.

Edit: oops...I meant warm.

Some successful examples:

Also, I would say that for a brown to be "warm" it needs to have more yellow than blue. I'd consider the following to be cool brown.

Some more examples. I'm thinking that one component of this is SF's (and my own) love of blue shirts. I say this because I notice a lot of @DocHolliday when looking through warmer fits, generally with a white shirt.

Very interesting question. A couple of thoughts:

(1) Is there a “warm” fit as close to foolproof as the “cool” blue top/light gray bottom? Perhaps it’s not that “warm” is hard, it’s that “cool” is easy.

(2) It’s also perhaps worth noting that there’s a significant degree of intersection between the things picked out by the warm/cool dichotomy and the things picked out by the “city/country” and “business/casual” dichotomies. Given that so much on the CM forum has to do with business dress, it doesn’t surprise me that “warm,” “city,” and “business” edge out the alternatives so far as the simple numbers go. (Relevant perhaps to your point “c.”)

I realize how lucky I am, from the point of view of dress, to be an academic and not a businessman. Brown has always been part of the academic scene, even in England, where the “no brown in town” attitude originated.

Cheers,

Ac

Now that I think about it, the majority of my wardrobe is "warm", especially in the fall/winter. I generally wear "cool" looks in the summer (or indian summer in San Francisco) but even then, I mix blue shirts in there all the time.

As long as basic color theory is followed, you should be fine Clags :)

Reds are the answer. Well, red, and texture, but mostly reds. Choose clothing that has warm low tones (this is most evident in leather, but anything that holds a dye, has low tones) and match it with other clothing with similar low tones. Don't know if you'd done it? If you own a pair of Number 8 CXL boots, or something like that, see if your trousers and your jacket complement, or contrast, with your footwear. (I belt will do as well). It can look good in both cases, but if is complementary rather than contrasting, you've got yourself a winner.

This coming from someone who has done visual merchandising more than he would have liked (it was fun a the beginning, and can still be fun occasionally) and was pretty good at it.
