I can get some gray wool pants for $52 at STP (Barry Bricken), or $150 at my small-town menswear shop (Corbin), or $300 for some brands online, and skyward from there. Barry Bricken has been described in a thread here as "not top of the line, but a really well-fitting, solidly made pant that uses significantly above average fabrics IMO", and "nice trousers for the money". The Corbin pants also seem to get decent reviews, although it sounds like I can get them cheaper online.

I don't live in or near a large enough city that I can try several brands to compare. What makes one pair of pants $50, another $150, and another $300?

I bought a pair of Corbin wool trousers a few years ago in a local shop. I ended up getting rid of it and didn't buy anymore...
Barry Bricken I haven't paid much attention to but I get the impression it's for old, fat men who do well enough to go golfing in their Tommy Bahama shirt from Nordstrom.

In that case I suggest buying some trousers online on the forum. You can see for yourself and $150 will get you nicer trousers than Corbin.
