New to The Site - From a few days reviews, conversations, and much digging through posts here, it seems some of the best buys under $1k suits are found at the likes of Mr Ned and WW Chan. I'd aspire to try one of these, but the budget won't hold it; these apparent outstanding options hit around $850 minimums for a suit, and my cap is $550. My topic is: are there reasonable, reliable MTM options at my price point?
WHY I LEAN TOWARDS MTM OVER OTR
Again from simple research, I imagine lots of men would choose to buy OTR w/ tailor in this price range. While I'd consider OTR (and welcome any advice), I think my frame may require more custom fitting: 5'7, 150lb and barrel-chested. My thought is MTM would be preferable. I'm willing to treat great fit as a priority over topnotch cloth (Is this crazy?).
WHAT I'VE FOUND SO FAR
Not much that's reliable. The likes of Astor & Black, NobleSuit, ASuitThatFits.com - most of these have been lambasted in this forum and others from those with more experience and knowledge than me. Thick as Thieves? Heard good things, but it seems more risky without the in-person fittings.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated. More details below.
PLACES I CAN AND CANNOT BE
No plans to be in Asia or Europe soon. However, I could be anywhere in North America for roughly 10 days, preferably near Chicago or east-coast.
PERSONAL & PREFERENCE NOTES
26 years old. Want 1 or 2 suits for both business and social settings (thinking of GQ's maxim "get a navy or charcoal suit for all occasions"), for wear w/ and w/o a necktie. All prior suits OTR, bought during undergrad college. Like the streamlined, understated but sharp look of the modern younger male ("Obama-on-a-good-day" not "double-breasted investment banker"). A fan of the modestly slim tie, a basic (not flowering) white pocket square. Because of budget and consistent use, would prefer a 3-season suit.
