I took my dark brown AE fifth avenues to the cobbler for a shoe shine. The uppers looked great but for some inexplicable reason they but black sole edge dressing on the soles. Any ideas on how to get it off? I used the search function and an old thread recommended nail polish remover. That didn't work. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Sand it off. No kidding. A fine grit sandpaper will take it off. You may then need to hit it back up with brown edge dressing or dye.

I would take them back to the cobbler and ask them to fix them. They really should know better than to put black edge dressing over a brown sole.

The dark burnished brown comes with black sole edging from factory. Your cobbler did no wrong.

Unless...
unless it is the Walnut Calf that you have?

Please clarify.

MOL, are you sure about that? AE gave me dark brown sole edge dressing for my brown AE's. It's very dark, almost black, but definitely brown.

It appeared so from the AE photo but on this particular model I can not say with 100% certainty.

Yeah they were definitely brown before. You could see the individual layers. Now it's just black. Might as well be rubber. lol

Please post photos.

Thanks for all the help. I took the shoes back this morning and they said they would fix it. So I guess we'll see.

Lesson learned: Shine your own shoes.
