Pickles and Pickley stuff

So, I was over in the People's Republic today and stopped by Cultured Pickle Shop. I'd had their sauerkraut before, as hot dogs are pretty much my guilty pleasure, and it is awesome. It is also the only product of theirs which is available in any markets, which is kind of unfortunate because they make some of the most delicious kimchee and other pickled products I've ever tasted. The "shop" is basically five square feet in the lobby of their work area, and the seem to sell, seasonally, twenty five or so different pickle products. They let us taste pretty much all of them, and while all were good, the June garlic pickled in miso and the kabocha pickled in sake lees were the stand outs for me. Just amazing. If you are over in the Berk, it is worth searching out. If not, since there have been a good number of pickle questions on here, this is kind of an interesting video from their site:

I have fond memories of spending the day in my grandmother's basement kitchen watching her can up a few hundred jars of pickles for the year. Unlike the girl in the video she had the good sense to wear a full shirt and not an undershirt when she made food for others. Little skeevy.

I don't like the pickling trend, but these are unlike the vinegar soaked dreck that you so often find. Each one has a ton of character.

A pub near me serves pork pie slices with some fantastic piccalilli. The pork pie by itself is pretty good but the piccalilli really perfects it, thinking about it is making me hungry.

That doesn't add much to the conversation, but the title made me think of it and now I want a pint and some pork pie.

Japanese kimchi is not really doing it for me, but then again, I had a bone to pick with Korean kimchi too.

All of the Japanese tsukemono are fantastic though. When eating out I regularly and willfully pay the $5 or so to get like a tiny plate of them.
