Pants - pleats, flat-front, finished, cuffed

Historically, what style is most traditional?

Anyone have the history on this stuff?

Flat fronts are the oldest style. Plain bottoms are more formal and cuffs came about in casual wear. Forward pleats (English style) are more traditional than reverse pleats (Italian style). Double pleats are more traditional than single pleats. More than 3 pleats are less traditional. Nowadays pleats and cuffs are seen as more traditional than flat fronts and plain bottoms.

resurrecting this thread ... are cuffed flat front pants more or less conservative, generally speaking, than uncuffed?

for my purposes, i mean FF pants that match with a suit jacket, at this point. although i have also been thinking about cuffing a pair of gray cotton trousers as well.

Traditionally, cuffs go with pleats. Flat fronts, with no cuffs. The cuffs were supposed to weight down the pleat to make them flatter.

Personally not a fan of pleats.

Neither is really more or less conservative than the other. go with what you like and fits comfortably. Personally I go Flat front plain bottoms.

Cuffs are not flashy at all. You dont have to worry about that as long as they are under 2 inches

These are all matters of personal choice. None are "flashy", "too conservative" or indeed "conservative", "most traditional" or any of the other questions that are being asked here.

Hi all, new here. Been over on the other forum for years, thought I would start posting here. The threads are more interesting here.
As for pleats or flat front pants, it's all about body type and how the pant drapes for each person. Not a big fan of pleats, flat fronts work much better for me, the drape is much better.

I like no cuffs, it's a smoother, longer look.

As someone who's 6'3 and high waisted, I prefer cuffs (yes, even on flat fronts) for exactly the opposite reason - it provide some vertical visual balance and reduces the length of the lower portion of my torso. Since I'm naturally high waisted, I'm not a 50/50 split vertically and some sizeable cuffs (1.5-2) at the end of my trousers helps reduce the longer look and imbalance in ratios from top "half" to bottom.
