Not wearing a pocket square

I've been reading through the threads and I'm still having difficulty understanding the pocket square.

I wear sport coats often but without PS's. What is the purpose of having one and why is it considered improper not to have one? Does not wearing one make your attire incomplete?

Pocket squares were more fun before so many people started marching in lockstep over them. Now I found myself questioning whether the practice of wearing one doesn't have a whiff of "me too!" about it.

I used to avoid wearing them as well, I think it was mostly out of fear or not matching the tie properly. Now that I'm more comfortable matching patterns and textures I wear them more often but not everytime I wear a jacker,
I also still only prefer very simple fold styles like the plain square and a few simple variants, but I keep my mind open to the fact that other styles may interest me later.

I joined SF in Novemeber of 2008. I never wore pocket squares, because I never really had a chance to wear sport jackets or suits anywhere. Since then, I've purchased a few pocket squares and every time I have worn them I have received multiple compliments on them. This becomes addicting, as does looking at yourself in the mirror and saying something like "wow, this does make a difference. Nice."

I love pocket squares.
