Non-vented jackets out of style?

Yes, we all know side vents are de rigeur right now--and always have been, I suppose--but seriously, what is the current status of the non-vented jackets? Can they still be worn without shame and embarrassment? Are any designers making non-vented jackets anymore? Thank you for any and all input and insights.

I would consider it a huge deal breaker. I have passed on jackets without vents that otherwise fit me perfectly.

The history for double vents comes from England and it was a feature designed out of necessity; that being to ride a horse in style.
Do you ride horses? I personally don't and so it seems odd to me to have a feature on a jacket I really don't need.
Though most of my suits are double vent, I also have many unvented jackets made well after 1988 (where did that year become your reference?).
A man with a large butt wearing a double vent can very easily look dumpy with that flap rising. True, that would be bad tailoring but why take a chance? Unvented is here to stay, popular on SF or not. I would rather wear an unvented over a single vent any day but to each his own.
Anyway, this topic has been covered before and there is certainly support for all three variations.

Like Lint says, it's been done to death on here. Right now unvented jackets are not in vogue but that is not to say they are not stylish. Many classic looking suits featured on AMC films down the decades are ventless, and as a correctly styled dinner jacket ought to be ventless the roots of it's formality are evident.

I just saw Casablanca for the umpteenth time and there's a scene where Rick is talking to Laszlo in the office above the casino, he turns his back to the camera and puts both his hands in his pockets and we are given a very unflattering view of Bogart's arse while his impeccable tropical dinner jacket is rumpled up around his belt line.

So I know I'm in a minority but I like the formal clean look of ventless jackets, but I'm careful to never put my hands in my pockets when wearing them, especially when buttoned. My Mam always told me that was bad manners anyway!

Agree with Ianiceman and Man of Lint, if the jacket is nice and fits well it wouldn't be a deal breaker. Having said that it would have to be a really good deal. However, I suspect that in the next few years ventless jackets will back in style, just like everything else in fashion that comes back. Wait until a couple of hipsters or "trendsetters" (call them Tom Ford, Prada, or whatever) start making them again.

FWIW, the suit that Cary Grant wore in North by Northwest was ventless, and it looks good.

One of my favorite sport coats is a ventless Zegna, dark blue, cashmere with patch pockets. Its very comfortable. I love it and don't care what the one person who may recognize that it is ventless thinks.

For those that dislike ventless jackets so much, how do you feel it changes the overall look of a jacket? It seems you have to be really looking it over to really notice and then only from the back.
