Wow, finally saw them again after , err, 17 years. I've seen maybe 1,000 bands play live, and the last 10 minutes of the show was by far and away the loudest I've ever seen by a lot.

Having said that, it was fantastic. Beautiful, beautiful noisy songs.

Bring your earplugs for the final noise barrage, it is awesome.

Now tomorrow night, I will enjoy some "quiet rock" by Sigur Ros - what a contrast.

They were pretty loud when they had Casey Rice doing their sound, but it was a completely different type of loud than a noisy rock band.

I've talked to a lot of people who have seen these MBV shows and they talk about how loud it is 100:1 over any other aspect of the shows. When I ask if they would go see them again the majority say no.

un-*******-believeable. to all those that didn't go, you missed out. yes, it was loud but that's what earplugs are for. i would go see them again in a heartbeat and had i known the show was going to be like that, i would have gone to see them the previous night.

Spectrum opened so that was a pleasant surprise. some very nice grooves going on a la early S'lab and Neu!.

(who the heck was that middle band and how did they make it on the bill?)

as far as MBV goes, i recognized all of the Loveless songs. they did most of them but didn't do two of my favorites, What You Want and Sometimes (from the LiT movie too). but they did To Here Knows When which is my favorite MBV song. and, like back in '93 at the Palace, they ended with You Made Me Realise and the now infamous 15 minutes of pure noise.

as i was leaving there was a guy with a bag of ice on his ears. he looked like he was in incredible pain.

a little disappointed that my first foray into bootlegging was unsuccesful (a coworker told me i had the wrong equipment) but otherwise, a great re-introduction to live rock after a ~5 year hiatus.

and if you get the chance, go see MBV. just make sure you bring some earplugs (although they were giving them away for free before the show).
