For a black monk, I much prefer a sleeker oxford design like Lobb's Jermyn II or EG Oundle. The only way to get either for under $500 is to luck out and find your size on Ebay. Jermyn II never goes on sale, and EG sale prices are more like $600 at the current exchange rate.

If you want a standard blucher monk, the C&J Savile from Plal comes to about $460 shipped to the US. That's a very nice shoe and the best you'll likely do in your price range. If you want a double monk, the Lowndes from Plal is about $100 less, though you won't get free shipping as you do with a hand grade.

Brooks Brothers has a nice shell version by Alden. It's currently $568.

Double monks have been extensively discussed ... I for one, have concluded that the EG Westminster is my choice. If not the JL Willam II, as a third the Handgrade C&J Seymour not sure if it is discontinued. But I would try them on ... do a search, and think about double vs single

i would second the EG Oundle/ RLPL Grant. yfyf also sports a nice EG Welland monk in black in the WAYWN thread and also this thread. unfortunately, both of these EGs are out of your price range. The best bet besides ebay would be to be patient and score a pair in the Buying and Selling forum. But that could be a while before a pair in your size shows up. Outside of that, I would second the C&J Saville. Great shoe for the price. The 337 is a great last. Good luck with your search.

I recently purchased some Ferragamo Tramezza black monks in the B&S forum. Filosofo is the name, highly recommended. Very sleek and a nice chisel.

What size are you? I have a pair of Black RLPL Hewitts(EG) 12 D for sale which I won from a GVH auction.

[I wore them once with very few steps on concrete/asphalt and the remainder on carpet. They're too small for me. I'm going to post them and several other pairs of shoes sized 11.5D-12D in the B&S forum when I have time to figure out how to sell online(pics, pmts, etc.)]
