I think this is part of the problem these days. Good baristas are few and far between. I remember about 6 or 7 years ago where they were excited about coffee and the coffee was better. They seem to be jaded here in NY. Just another food service job. Another part of the problem is a lot of the rosters that are present here have kind of converged and lost their identities in terms of their offerings and profiles.

Not as much of an issue in SF. Also a reason to DIY.

Does everyone buy their coffee through the mail now?

I mainly do. I augment with the occasional Starbucks Reserve or Great Barrington Roasters if I happen to be in Boston

Ordered Stumptown once cuz I wanted one of their mugs, and shipping made sense.  I didn't love it.

I bought a bag last time I was in Stumptown and loved it. If I see one of their stores this weekend I'm getting some for sure.

Never heard of Gregory. Birch Coffee, I enjoy, which they don't mention. The best espresso in NYC is at two places places that I have found so far: Eataly and Fortunato Brother's in Brooklyn (Alleged Mob owned Italian Bakery). For regular coffee La Colombe blends are nice as are many of Counter Culture's offerings, including their blends. That sour-ass, Ethiopia really pissed me off that I had from them recently though.

Did you make this yourself or have it at a cafe? I find the Counter Culture does a pretty terrible job of creating consistent quality across all of the independent cafes they supply. I've had some really good coffee at a Counter Culture cafe, and some really really poor coffee. I think it's more to do with preparation than it is with the coffee itself.

Oops, good catch, the sour-ass Ethiopia I had was at La Colombe made in their Steampunk. I believe member indesurtum also expressed hate towards it. It was probably the lightest roasted coffee I have ever had.

I do agree on the inconsistency of Counter Culture, and I also agree it is because of poor preparation. They are a great roaster though.
