the man passed away in the early 80s,

40 years after the fact seems more like homage/atmosphere than theft

but what is the real difference

Good lerd...
This take is as bad as Lewis Hamilton recently suing ( and losing ) Hamilton Watches.

I saw that suit a bit differently. Hamilton watch trademarked the name leaving Lewis Hamilton in a position to never be able to use his own name for anything commercial. I don't think Lewis was trying to get one over on Hamilton watches.

I think I agree that it's a little scummy, but so light on the scale it doesn't tip it in either direction. The bigger news is that anyone at all is buying the grandfather's map story. What a world.
I would have read the map story, and been like "Just sounds like random branding copy," especially given what the company sells. Without reading this thread, I would still not know who is Satchel Paige. I think that that would go for the vast majority of Americans.

And incidentally, this is nothing like appropriating Juneteenth would be.

I just mean if it's their alternate explanation for why their store is named this way, then by process of elimination they are named after the baseball player. "Buying it" is probably a little strong.

As to why they chose to name themselves after a somewhat obscure but historic the baseball player: I don't know and I don't care.
