Just got my New Standards from www.apc.fr. Â Luckily I picked the right size (I am normally in between a 31 and a 32) - 30's. Â The waist is just right (forgot to measure it though, I can put that measurement up later if anyone wants it) but the inseam is 36". Â Since I like 33-33.5 I am thinking that I should get them hemmed - they look weird when I am wearing them since they are all bunched up in the lower leg/knee/ankle. Â Does getting them hemmed to 34.25 or 34.5 sound about right? Â My main question is what sort of shoes should I be wearing with the APCs? Â With my darker jeans I like to wear a pair of black Nike Cortez, but since the leg opening is only 8" this doesn't look quite right - although they do look fine with a pair of Diesel's I have whose leg opening is 9". I figure I should use this as an excuse to buy new sneakers to wear with them. I am not a fan of chucks, so those are out for sure. Should I go for some mid height shoes rather than lows? I have been looking at these recently: http://www.final-score.com/catalog....ID=8734 They are lows, but I think you can get them in mid too. My bias against mid though is that you can't wear them with shorts, which is something I do being as I live in Houston. Anyone have any other shoe suggestions on what could work with the New Standards?

I believe the rule is that one should not wear black shoes with jeans, black Chucks being the only exception.

I have never seen a single pair of decent looking Nike or New Balance sneakers. Those brands specialize in the "athletic-styling" that I find to be so bland and ugly. Simple, bold designs and colorways are my preference.

The Adidas you picked are good, though I would avoid black. Perhaps a good compromise would be grey. For something more unique than Adidas, I've been eyeing Gola recently.

Well, while definitely not the coolest shoes out there - they are ok and I think they look alright. Â http://www.pickyourshoes.com/collect...ic_blk_wht.htm That is the pair just for reference. Mainly the reason I wear them instead of my white Adidas Country IIs is because the Adidas don't look right with straight-legged jeans for some reason. But this aside - what shoes are there that would look good with the only 8" opening. Â That is the real problem that I am trying to fix now I think. I saw some of the Golas you were looking at in another thread, and they were pretty cool - maybe I will try to check them out. I think the problem is there aren't a bunch of sneaker stores that I know of here so I can't try on the shoes that I see online that I like, and thus I have no clue how my pants fall over them.

First off, hem the bottoms, and you'll get another inche or so. Second, I think that pretty much any sneaker will work, as long as they are not Air Force One chunky. Unless you really like the Dior Homme look, of course.

I think I will do this and report back - just tell them to keep the original hems?

Also, it shouldn't be a problem that I already wore them once and there are some ridges/wrinkles on the bottom of the legs, right?

Doesn't matter about the ridges. You'll get more soon enough. Also, forget about the original hems. The slight taper on the jeans puts a kibosh on it being a good idea.

I'm having the same problem with my APC Rescues. Just about all my other jeans are of the bootcut variety, and as such, all my shoes have been picked to look good in bootcut. Most of the shoes I have now do look kinda funny with my APCs due to the smaller leg opening. I have found that cuffing 'em a few inches makes the opening larger, which helps a lot. Currently, I'm wearing a pair of Asics Onitsuka Mexico 66 with 'em, and they look OK.

It's just a matter of shifting paradigms. Japanese dudes have been wearing Dunks with slim straightleg jeans and looking good doing so for a while now. Really, it's just a matter of mindset. If you are having trouble thouhg, just get a pair of running shoe style sneakers for the time being - vintage styled NB and Saucony shoes would work well.

I like the look of white canvas Vans slip-ons or lace-ups (the plain ones, no leather/suede). But then again, I'm very old school.

I wear a pair of black pointy chelsea boots with my dry jeans. They look great. Although the leather is not shiny by any means...

boots, as well, are an exception to the rule, undoubtedly. Black boots with jeans is a classic, unobjectionable look.

I think that's a stupid rule, if it even is one. Black glossy plasticky shoes, no. But I think black soccer shoes, black sneakers, black suede shoes, etc. can look good with dark jeans. And even if it is a rule, I don't care, and I'll keep doing whatever, so there.

I'd agree that rules with clothing are pointless and reach into the realm of obsessiveness, I generally do not wear black shoes with dark jeans (except for chucks) because it just doesn't look good to me.

I suggest you give white Stan Smith or these a try.
