One carry-on bag. If the trip is longer than three days, I have a tough time deciding if I should pack a second bag to be checked or just use the hotel laundry.

Just came back from a sojurn to Thailand/Vietnam/Cambodia/Angkor Wat, etc with ladyfriend in tow and we both still prefer to travel with the requisite collection of steamer trunks, hard luggage, hat boxes and the like. She at least managed to include her trusty vintage Mark Cross overnight bag just in case we were forced into a smallish room or less than adequate suite somewhere. Travelling long haul with porters and three wardrobe changes per day is most difficult in these so-called "modern" times.

I have managed two weeks abroad with two carry on bags, one of which is on wheels. In the 2 bags were 3 pairs of leather shoes, 1 pair sneakers, 1 pair sandals, 2 suits, 1 blazer, 1 rain jacket, 4 dress shirts, 2 casual shirts, 1 pair shorts, several ties and belts, and toiletries. I was amazed at how much I was able to pack in the two bags.

I'd imagine the modern equivalent would require him to commandeer several planes. They also used to travel with a great deal of furniture, portable toiletry facilities and trunks of silver regalia.
