What about Nike Free? They're pretty minimalist compared to most contemporary hi-tech running shoes. I still think they'd be relegated to workout only shoes for me and I'd stick to the old standbys: Chucks, Purcells, and Vans for casual dress.

I agree with both of you, but the idea of my original question was to find a shoe that can do double duty when I travel and can only fit one pair of extra shoes in my bag and still carry on the airplane. Some of my dress shoes I can pull off with casual pants; some don't work and only look right with a suit. So sometimes I'll wear those and pack my running shoes - which I think look dorky outside of a gym or on a run. I am looking for an athletic shoe that I could reasonably pair with jeans for casual dining or walking around and then take to the gym the next morning.

This is all about compromises.

Well, that depends on what you plan on doing in the gym the next morning. If you're weight lifting, virtually any shoe will do..lots of weight lifters swear by chucks. why? I have no clue, but ive heard it has something to do with the flat soles.

If you're running, thats a whole different story. Everyone says that runners need a real running shoe, complete with all the silver trim and air-bubble soles (and the price tag). Back in the 80s everybody ran in shoes with "way less support" and as far as I know runners today don't have any less arthritis, though I could be wrong. If you're running a lot, I'd say bite the bullet and get one of those terribly dorky runners. You can always pack a pair of super lightweight casual shoes like sperrys or chucks, which can squeeze into just about any bag no matter how packed. If you're not running a lot, like a couple of miles, why not just skip the routine for a day and sleep in? Or, hit the pool.. swim trunks take up way less space than an extra pair of runners.

Those shoes Levitt is wearing in 500 Days look like regular Pumas to me.

Those AMQ shoes are a no, the texture around the sole is ugly and the stripes across the toe cap look weird. PF Flyers Number 5's have a similar look without the ugliness.

I have two pair of Adidas Superstars, one in all black, the other in all white. I think they're nice, plain without being to the point of boring, never really been a Nike sort of dude.

While we're on trainwreck sneakers, I also have a pair of these horror shows, I found them cheap on Ebay and had to own them, just to say I did. As if these aren't bad enough, there was also a pair released in purple, I **** you not:

As far as those handicap New Balances, they look like something a wheelchair-bound pimp would wear.

I like the adidas campus over the Superstar. The superstar gives off too much of a middle school vibe for me cause it looks a little chunky and I know a lot of girls back then who customized their pair with glittery laces and stuff.

+ the suede on the adidas campus fades to a pretty nice color so it ages not just by looking beat up.

Hey guys, since this is the "sneaker" thread...I'm a size 9 in Converse Chuck Taylors, what's my size in Vans Authentics?
