I know that quite a few sailors used to wear their belts like that so they could get to the buckle more readily in case of a fight.

A popular look among the drug-centric crowd is to wear one around the arm and bite the end. Syringe optional (but preferable).

I thought it originated from people not wanting to scratch the finish on their guitars.

I think belts, at least as far as streetwear is concerned, are more function than style. I wear one to hold up my pants, but I leave my shirts untucked most of the time and don't care if anybody ever sees it.

i don't really care if anyone sees my belt also. not to mention the only 2 belts i have are natural color. so the look dirty and have indigo stains on them.

I don't think anybody here would wear a belt for function- we believe in fit too much. Any pants that need a belt should not be worn.
