What features would you look for in a nice dress belt? I have no clue about belts.

Generally speaking, in my opinion, belts should be thin and elegant and understated. This applies to both the belt itself and also the buckle. Obviously leather quality is key, and the best way to get a sense for quality is to know the brand and/or feel it in person. If the belt feels plasticky or insubstantial, that's usually a dead giveaway of bad leather (or faux leather).

Avoid the "corporate IT guy" look by not choosing an extremely wide belt with a big, shiny buckle.
