I got my 5EPs today (3 pairs -- rigid boot, one wash straight, and a dark worn) and need the fora's advice on a couple of items...

1. What's the protocol for the red thread on the patch? Cut or leave? I'm thinking cut but love to get people's opinion.

2. I ordered a pair of rigids and one wash and need to get them both hemmed. Should I wash both pairs before I hem them?

3. Can anyone recommend a place to get my jeans hemmed, either in San Francisco or Los Angeles?

Thanks in advance!

1.) I'm leaving my red threads as is. I actually like it.

2.) Soak/Wash then hem.

3.) Hollywood Trading Company will be happy to chainstich your hem for 16 USD. It's located on Beverly Blvd. in Los Angeles.

I know I got my straight cut and bootleg last week and I'm amazed.

3 pairs, huh? Well, you don't fool around, in any case.

I would keep the thread. I know that some people cut off the thread, but I personally think that it looks really cool, Just a little bit of color and visual interest on an otherwise very clean jean.

Definitely wash the rigids before getting them hemmed. Wash in hot water. They do shrink in length (unless you stretch them out). Conversely, you can get them hemmed 1" long, and just let them bunch a bit (interesting wear at the hem) before eventually washing them.

HTC, as already suggested.

Wear them well.

Doh! I already cut the threads on my Dark Worn. I'll leave them on the others until I get tired of them... (better to have than not!)

With all the great buzz on the jeans, I had to get a pair or two. The 3rd came b/c it was an irregular short length. Being only 5'3", I have to hem everything so to get a pair that fit was AWESOME! I wish it had been a one-wash or rigid but it was the Dark Worn. The jean still looks good but would have preferred no distressing.

This forum has completely distorted my perception on denim! I used to only buy Gap (only company that makes a 28" length) but that's not even an option now...

Can't wait to get them hemmed! Thanks (and curse you) guys!

Glad you like them.

Leave the threads on...they came right off the machine like that and has a special significance...good luck, authenticity, and was inspired by a trip I took to India in 1985 and the color of temple in Kyoto Japan FYI

I say don't wash them...they will " grow " better...and you will be amazed how great th natural wear it exepcially the Rigd.
If you must wash them......Wash then cold inside out dude....and might I suggest do it in the tub with mild detergent. Check this link for more tips

Godmother, would it be possible to have 5EP "repair" the threads if say, a lame drycleaner, cut them off? This is the totally paranoid side of me, who simply doesn't want to get red thread and sew it on himself. Just curious, I doubt I'd want to send it in for this.

Great to hear from you Godmother. Now I totally regret cutting off the threads on my Dark Worns... especially when you hear it from the source. Thanks for the washing tip. I was planning to wash my rigids in cold water. I have to since I need to get them hemmed. Now if you made a pair my length, then that's a whole different story... Any chance of that happening?

BTW, how's your back? Hopefully, you're all better.

Hello Godmother!

I purchased a pair of rigid bootcut I received from you recently. Should I soak them first ( not wash ) for shrinkage before I wear them to death? Thanks!

Same question here. Don't know if they're sanforized. Hitman just answered me back and I don't know what I'm gonna ask for. Also, what's the resin coating on the lowdown bootcut?

I don't intend to wash my pair so I did not soak them. I suppose it wouldn't be a bad idea if you think the inseam is too long.

Guys please leave those questions to other board members who have vast experience with raw denim. We're really lucky to have Godmother on board here, I don't want her to get swamped with questions about shrinking and stretching.

To answer your question, unless you need to get the length shrinkage out for one reason or another, it wouldn't be necessary to soak them before wearing. I personally like the look and feel of one-wash jeans, but 5EP jeans are sanforized and you won't get any awkward results if your first wash comes after multiple months of wear, so if you want that little bit of extra contrast you get from wearing them raw, don't soak em.

They still wear in great from a one-wash state (my jeans were bought O/W and are faded beautifully). But generally speaking, on the same wearer, in an equal amount of time, raw jeans are going to take on just a tad bit more contrast because the creases are goingt o be sharper.

The resin on the one wash jeans just gives them a slightly duller, darker color and a slightly smoother, harder hand compared to the rigids. The jeans are sanforized, but the rigids are cut to account for about 1" shrinkage over several washes. I would size down one (Godmother recommends the same) if you intend to wear them out of the box.

Thanks. That kinda helps. What would happen to the fades after those washes, though? They'd move up as well?
