Difference Between Single Cuff, Barrel Cuff and Double Cuff

The main distinctions between cuffs are whether they require buttons or cufflinks to fasten, and whether they are folded back (double) or single. The main resulting types are therefore

• barrel cuffs, the standard style fastened by one or two buttons according to taste;
  
• double, or French, cuffs, which are more formal, and have an extra length of sleeve folded back and fastened with links;
  
• and single cuffs, the most formal style which are double cuffs without the fold.

After reading the content of this thread, I have the impression that the only type of cuffs that does not require links is barrel cuffs.

Is that correct or incorrect?

Yes.

Barrel cuffs have one button and one button hole. No need for links.

There are also cocktail cuffs (they have a few other names, can't be bothered to google). A very rare style, they are buttoned cuffs that fold back over themselves, for people who desire double cuffs without fiddling with cufflinks. Personally not a fan of them, but THE MORE YOU KNOW!

Sorry to bump this old thread, but charles tyrwhitt dress shirts come in single cuff or french cuff. What is the difference between the two?

Do they use single cuff to refer to barrel cuffs, or do those single cuffs require links as well? The info in this thread seems contradictory

Double cuff = french cuff; requires cufflinks.
Single cuff in RTW business shirts = barrel cuff; comes with buttons.

The only possible confusion is for single cuff on a formal shirt (white tie) which will require links also.

Terrence Young had Connery wear these in the first few Bond flicks as he liked them himself. I don't like them and it's an affectation that the largely utilitarian Bond of the novels would have probably frowned upon.

to actually answer the question, for CT shirts. Double=French=links Single=button cuffs.
