You're right, that is weird.

Technically, nubuck is leather that has been abraded to have a suede-like nap. The shoe looks like smooth leather to me.

it definitely feels very smooth, not like one would expect nubuck to be...

Nubuck is a cow leather that's get sanded on the hair-side, while most suede is calf leather sanded on the flesh-side. The nap in nubuck is far less pronounced than in suede.

Maybe that's where the "˜Antique' bit comes from. There is a classic leather for riding boots called "˜waxed calf', this is leather where the flesh-side (the matt one) gets waxed and boned and becomes more shiny than ordinary leather on the hair-side. I believe that's what they have done with that nubuck.

It's only a guess on my part, you better contact C & J for clarification.

Totally agree with other members that they just look like plain calf.

I could be wrong but I think it comes both in black OR antique nubuck. The one displayed is the black calf version.

The brown "antique nubuck" doesn't look like nubuck either. I saw them at the T&A store in NY. Someone commented they looked like very high quality corrected grain.

So I guess at this point it is still a mystery. Maybe somebody else on this board knows and will reply soon...

C&J's mail order & retail catalogue for 2006/07 offers the Tetbury in black calf and dark brown antique nubuck.

I remember asking both at C&J's factory shop and at the Royal Exchange shop about their "nubuck" - as with everyone else here, I thought it was supposed to be like suede. I was told by both that nubuck was halfway between calf and suede and that in this case they've put some sort of finish on it to make it more durable.

They also said that it should be maintained with shoe cream and wax a la calf.

I can attest to the fact that the nubuck polishes and wears pretty much like a slightly more durable calf. It just seems to take a little more work to get the nice mirror shine on the toe.

I own the Tetbury in brown. They scuff way too easily, but the scuffs are very easy to buff out with just a dry cloth.

Ok, so it is almost a calf and should be treated as such. Should I also apply some silicon layer as a protection against rainy weather and other influences?

What a coincidence! I just bought these shoes last week (in 'dark brown antique nubuck') and had the exact same question. They don't look like a smoother version of suede at all, more like regular calf. Also, I got a tin of wax from the shoe-shalesman (Kiwi paradegloss dark tan). I applied the wax and the shoes still look great! Very happy now with my first pair of ' high end shoes' .
