Mostly idle speculation, but the NYT today wonders if the Drew contract falls through, and there are serious problems in getting this thing signed because of his history of injury, the Red Sox might turn to Barry Bonds, who is also still unsigned over contract language issues.

Can you imaging Barry and Manny on the same team? Headcase city:

Highly, highly unlikely for a number of reasons:

- Bonds has said in the past that he would never want to play in Boston because the city is racist.

- Although the Drew contract is taking forever to finalize, everything I've read from both sides indicates that the deal will happen. There is something going on with Drew's shoulder that has given the Sox pause. Supposedly, they are working on contract language to address this issue and provide the Sox with some comfort.

- I don't think the Red Sox want to invest a large sum of money in what would be a short-term solution, especially one with this amount of baggage. Putting aside the amphetamine issue and the steroid suspicions directly, Bonds is about to break a record that no one (outside of SF fans) wants him to break. As briancl pointed out, they'd be better off re-signing Nixon for what would be a lot less money or even playing Willy Mo Pena in right (who's not a great fielder, but neither is Bonds, at this point).

- Playing left field in Fenway is tricky, and Barry (and his suspect knees) just isn't the fielder he used to be.

Of course, stranger things have happened, but I just don't see this one.

god i hope not. as a sox fan, i'm having flashbacks of jose canseco, jack clark, etc... Bonds (at this point) is just another over the hill slugger who can't play outfield anymore...
